Book of Proverbs - The Word "Fool"

Drugs, gangs, violence, racism, poverty, divorce, illegitimacy, the ills of society are too many to name. So much disorder in the lives of individuals, families, and society as a whole where does it come from? How do human beings diagnose these problems?

The wisdom literature of the Bible (which includes Job, Ecclesiastes, some of the Psalms, and especially the book of Proverbs) gives us a sharp description and diagnosis of this crisis of character. It calls it "folly."

The English word "fool" translates several Hebrew words used widely in the Old Testament for individuals who are lacking in moral character. A fool is not someone who is silly or unintelligent, but one who is unwise. He has never learned that "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge."

Book of Proverbs -- Self Confident Fools

Proverbs 10:1 - The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother.
Proverbs 17:24 - The discerning sets his face toward wisdom, but the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth.
Proverbs 26:18-19 - Like a madman who throws firebrands, arrows, and death is the man who deceives his neighbor and says, "I am only joking!" 2 Timothy 3:16 - All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
Proverbs 6:1-35 - My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, have given your pledge for a stranger, if you are snared in the words of your mouth, caught in the words of your mouth, then do this, my son, and save yourself, for you have come into the hand of your neighbor: go, hasten, and plead urgently with your neighbor. Give your eyes no sleep and your eyelids no slumber; save yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the hand of the fowler.
1 Corinthians 1:27 - But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; James 2:20-24 - Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works; and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness" - and he was called a friend of God. You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.
Proverbs 29:11 - A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back.
Proverbs 1:22 - "How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge?
Proverbs 14:16 - One who is wise is cautious and turns away from evil, but a fool is reckless and careless.
Proverbs 10:14 - The wise lay up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool brings ruin near.
Proverbs 21:20 - Precious treasure and oil are in a wise man's dwelling, but a foolish man devours it.
Psalm 107:17 - Some were fools through their sinful ways, and because of their iniquities suffered affliction;
Proverbs 15:20 - A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish man despises his mother.
Proverbs 29:9 - If a wise man has an argument with a fool, the fool only rages and laughs, and there is no quiet.
Luke 10:20 - Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."
Psalm 14:1 - To the choirmaster. Of David. The fool says in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds, there is none who does good.
Isaiah 45:7 - I form light and create darkness, I make well-being and create calamity, I am the Lord, who does all these things.
Romans 8:1-39 - There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
Proverbs 14:15 - The simple believes everything, but the prudent gives thought to his steps.

Psalm 39:1-7 - I said, "I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth as long as the wicked are in my presence." But when I was silent and still, not even saying anything good, my anguish increased. My heart grew hot within me, and as I meditated, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue: "Show me, O LORD, my life's end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life. You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Each man's life is but a breath. "Selah" Man is a mere phantom as he goes to and fro: He bustles about, but only in vain; he heaps up wealth, not knowing who will get it. "But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you.
